May Database SIG Meeting

Topic: Oracle in the EMEA by Daniel Morgan

Abstract: We are not absolutely sure what Morgan will present as he is heading out for two weeks, beginning May 2nd to Munich Germany at the request of Oracle to take part in the EMEA (Europe Middle-East Africa) President's Conference. But along the way he will be spending a few "quiet" hours in Copenhagen Denmark with Møgens Norgaard. So join us for this surprise presentation ... the raffle item will, we suspect, be a bottle of Miracle beer.

As always we invite anyone interested to join us ...
PSOUG membership is not required ...
Dinner will be served between 5:30 and 6:00pm and is free for everyone ...
The technical presentation will be from 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Wednesday May 21st
5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mount Si Room: 500 108th Av NE, 2nd floor

April Database SIG Meeting

We had hoped Oracle VP Barry Perkins would have been able to join us to talk about optimum hardware platform selection for Oracle which would have included a discussion of Oracle on zLinux.

Unfortunately, well it is Q4, Barry had to return to the Bay Area so we called upon two of our local experts to help us and we, with half-a-day's notice had two unique presentations

Topic 1: More Oracle Gems from Ace Director Dan Morgan (University of Washington)

Abstract: Since our March meeting Morgan has found a couple of new gems in Oracle 10g and 11g and shared three of them with us. They were:

  • Default password identification (look at the Fast Way 4 demo).

  • Finding Oracle Homes from inside the database (look for Product Homes).

  • Bulk Collection and FORALL with triggers (look for default_pwd$).

Topic 2: Log Mining from Caleb Small (Camosun College)

Caleb's demo, which will be posted here as soon as we can get a copy from him, included a review of auditing methodologies and demonstrated the usage, and considerations, in using the DBMS_LOGMNR and DBMS_LOGMNR_D built-in packages for mining archived redo logs.

Database Workshops

Since 2003 when PSOUG first set up its lab ... our education offerings have been directed primarily to Oracle's High Availability feature set and to offering training not offered anywhere else.

That was fine but not everyone is a DBA and not everyone is able to go to work and spend their time working in Oracle's latest release with plenty of time to learn about new features and new "best practices."

To support our members we have begun an on-going series of 3 hour single-subject evening classes. Each one designed to be hands-on and teach a complete skill set.

Whether your skill set is beginning, intermediate, advanced, or expert you will want to explore these workshops further and see how they will be of value to you. To do so: Click Here

Critcal Patch Advisory

Oracle expects to release it's next CPU (Critical Patch Update) in April. For more information [Click Here]

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Morgan has been preparing new materials for his program at the University of Washington and part of what he has done is compare, feature-for-feature, Microsoft's latest database offering. He tells us he was not just surprised, but amazed, at the amount of functionality the Microsoft product lacks: And he's not done yet. To see the comparison: Click Here.
